Urgent Appeal
on behalf of the Iraqi
Labor Movement and USLAW
Dear Sisters and Brothers:
We are writing to ask you to make a generous contribution to the
USLAW Iraq Labor Solidarity Fund
to support the work of unions in Iraq.
USLAW has received appeals from Iraq's labor movement to support a number of
important projects.
- Following a recent strike in the
petroleum industry, the Federation of Workers Councils and Unions in Iraq
seeks to raise $10,000 for a conference of oil sector workers to enable them
to develop their demands, coordinate their struggles, and mobilize their
forces in opposition to the continuing threat of privatization of the oil
industry and to meet the basic needs of workers and their families.
- The General Union of Oil Employees
seeks support for an anti-privatization conference in Basra and their
efforts to unify the workers in the industry across Iraq.
- USLAW needs to raise funds to bring
leaders of the Iraq Federation of Trade Unions, General Union of Oil
Workers, and Iraq Freedom Congress to the U.S. to the December National
Assembly and Labor Conference Against the Iraq War in Cleveland. Following
the events in Cleveland, we will arrange meetings with members of Congress,
national labor leaders and speaking engagements in Washington, DC and other
East Coast cities. We estimate the cost of bringing this delegation from
Iraq and travel within the U.S. to exceed $15,000.
- USLAW needs resources to be able to
offer concrete solidarity to Iraqi's workers as they struggle against the
occupation and to build a unified progressive democratic society free of all
foreign domination and interference. All contributions to the Solidarity
Fund will be used exclusively for solidarity activities and financial
support to the labor movement in Iraq.
-
- Please send a personal
contribution and ask your union, labor council or other organization to
make its own contribution. Checks should be made payable to "USLAW
Iraq Labor Solidarity Fund."
- Send donations to
USLAW, 1718 M Street, NW, #153,
Washington, DC 20036.
[If you want to claim a personal tax
deduction, make the check payable to USLAW/IPS and put "Solidarity Fund"
in the memo line.]
- Thanks in advance for your solidarity
and generosity,
